Blasted as a racist on liberal cable networks Friday, President Trump issued this denial in his sixth tweet of the morning:
“Never said anything derogatory about Haitians other than Haiti is, obviously, a very poor and troubled country. Never said ‘take them out.’ Made up by Dems. I have a wonderful relationship with Haitians. Probably should record future meetings – unfortunately, no trust!”
Earlier, Trump tweeted: “The language used by me at the DACA meeting was tough, but this was not the language used. What was really tough was the outlandish proposal made – a big setback for DACA!”
The Washington Post, quoting sources in the room, said the president on Thursday asked lawmakers at a meeting on immigration reform: “Why are we having all these people from shithole countries come here?”
According to the Post:
Trump then suggested that the United States should instead bring more people from countries such as Norway, whose prime minister he met with Wednesday. The president, according to a White House official, also suggested he would be open to more immigrants from Asian countries because he felt that they help the United States economically.
In addition, the president singled out Haiti, tellling lawmakers that immigrants from that country must beleft out of any deal, these people said.
“Why do we need more Haitians?” Trump said, according to people familiar with the meeting. “Take them out.”
Trump on Friday tweeted that a DACA deal has “now taken a big step backwards,” in light of the plan presented to him Thursday at the White House. He said Democrats are not “interested in life and safety.”
The plan reportedly fell far short of the president’s demands, which include funding for a border wall and an end to chain migration and the diversity visa lottery system.
The president repeated on Fridady that he wants a “merit-based system of immigration and people who will help take our country to the next level.”
